This committee seeks to inspire a love of country and good citizenship through patriotic observances, flag etiquette, civic instruction in schools, the Americanization of Immigrants, community service and youth activities such as Boys State, Boy Scouts, Oratorical Contest, School Award medals and American Legion Baseball.

Current Post 403 Americanism Committee activities include the following:

  1. Education Activities
    • Citizenship Day and Week – In commemoration of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, they were originally established by two Joint Resolutions of Congress in 1952 and 1956, respectively.  The President now designates September 17th as Citizenship Day and the period beginning September 17th and ending September 23rdas Constitution Week.
    • American Education Week (AEW), usually celebrated the week before Thanksgiving
    • Veterans in the Classroom, often done in conjunction with Veterans Day
    • Bill of Rights Day – December 15th
  2. Flag Education – Legion.org/Flag
    Flagpole donation – 2010
  3. Youth Activities (*report at bottom of page)
  4. Patriotic Holiday Programs
    • Arbor Day – Last Friday of April
    • Memorial Day – Last Monday of May
    • Flag Day – June 14
    • Independence Day – July 4
    • Veteran’s Day – November 11
